Introduction / History

The Bahau people live along the upper reaches of the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Their language, Bahau, is part of the Austronesian language family and is still spoken in daily life, though Indonesian is increasingly used, especially among younger generations and in formal settings. The Bahau have a long history in the interior forests of Borneo, where they have maintained their distinct identity through oral traditions, traditional longhouses, and unique rituals. Over time, the Bahau have experienced influences from neighboring Dayak groups and from outside traders, but they have preserved much of their cultural heritage and continue to value their ancestral lands and customs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bahau people primarily live in rural villages along rivers, where they depend on agriculture, fishing, and hunting for their livelihoods. Families work together to cultivate rice, vegetables, and fruit, and they often raise pigs and chickens. The Bahau diet is based on rice, fish, wild game, and locally grown produce, with meals often shared among family and neighbors. Men typically fish and hunt in the forests, while women tend to gardens, and manage household tasks. Extended families often live in traditional longhouses, fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support.

Celebrations and festivals are important aspects of Bahau life, especially those connected to the rice harvest and major life events such as weddings. These occasions are marked by music, dance, and communal feasts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bahau people are primarily Christian, with many having embraced Christianity through the work of missionaries in the past century. Christian beliefs and practices shape much of community life, with church attendance, prayer, and the celebration of Christian holidays being important. In some areas, traditional beliefs and customs are blended with Christian practices, especially in ceremonies related to agriculture and family life. While the gospel has taken root among the Bahau, there are still those who hold to traditional animistic beliefs, and the need for deeper discipleship remains.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Bahau villages are located in remote areas, making access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities challenging. Children may have limited schooling, and families often face difficulties related to poverty and preventable diseases.
